AUGUSTA, Maine – The pouring rain did not stop the Children’s Center and its many supporters from celebrating the unveiling of its new playground on Friday, June 19th. The Children’s Center was joined by First Lady Karen Baldacci, Senate President Libby Mitchell, Representative and Children’s Center board member Patsy Crockett, Augusta Mayor Roger Katz, and Center supporters David and Kaye Flanagan among others to give thanks to the many businesses, groups, and individuals who contributed to creating the most unique playground in Augusta.
The newly expanded playground represents the Children’s Center’s
commitments to inclusion, wellness, and healthy outdoor play. The Maine
Outdoors theme resounds throughout the features of the playground,
which already include a stone waterfall, cedar play structures, a
separate toddler area, and a lobster boat. New features include a moose
slide, a lighthouse, a mountaintop climbing structure, an expanded bike
path, and a barn. The biggest achievement, an “Enchanted Forest” area
featuring a stand of white birch, elm, and sugar maple was dedicated to
Center supporters Robert and Moira Fuller. Get the Flash Player to see this player. Picking up on the momentum built by KLI, additional supporters included Sam’s Club, Toby and Kelly Thompson, Matt Hunter, Longfellow’s Greenhouse, Quirion Construction, Jim MacDonald, Kennebec Technologies, the Kennebec Networkers, Leonard’s Landscapes, Target, Colby College, Home Depot, JD Groundscapes, Cony High School, Victor Caprara, Wingate Landscaping, Capital Area Technical Center, Hammond Lumber, and Jenny McKendry.
