Children's Center Offers Much Needed Childcare
AUGUSTA, Maine - The Children's Center, located at 1 Alden Avenue in Augusta, offers childcare to area families.
The Children's Center has been a resource to local families since 1966. The purpose and focus of the Center has evolved over those forty-plus years, and this current development is a reflection of its ongoing response to local needs.
"The Children's Center has long provided services to children with special needs, and since 1994 has been offering integrated preschool classrooms for kids with special needs alongside other typically developing kids," explains Executive Director, Jonathan Leach. "What we have learned is that all kids benefit from the experience. Kids learn best from other kids...kids with special needs learn very naturally and effectively from peers, and kids who are typically developing learn empathy and better communication skills when they are around kids with different abilities. When we combine that awareness with the local shortage of quality preschool services, and the fact that our facility is a state-of-the-art early care and education setting, our responsibility to offer this service is clear."
All childcare classrooms are managed by highly trained staff. Employees in the childcare and early education programs are certified as educational technicians and many hold teaching certifications. Each large, sunny classroom is equipped with developmentally appropriate materials. The Children's Center is licensed as a childcare facility by the Department of Health and Human Services, and is an approved provider for Child Development Services. All children attending the Center will have access to the Center's beautiful, fully accessible playground.
The Children's Center offers four childcare classrooms for children of various ages. We provide care in the "Seedlings" class room for children ages six weeks to eighteen months. One classroom provides care for children ages 18 to 30 months, another for children from ages 2 ½ to 3 ½, and a fourth room for children from ages 3 ½ to 5. Childcare is available from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, year round. The Center is closed on holidays.
